Article #107: NS P61 w/ SD40-2's 3270, 3459 & 3262 Hickory, NC (October 25, 2013)
In this new article, we will be taking a look at NS P61 westbound into Hickory, North Carolina back in October of 2013.
P61 at this time ran daily originating in Spencer, North Carolina and terminating at Oyama Yard in Hickory. It started out in the early afternoon and would arrive at Oyama in the early evening hours.
The three locomotives on the train this day were all SD40-2's. Not only were they all SD40-2's, but they also all had different cab designs. 3270 had the high hood design, 3459 had the standard cab, and 3262 had the admiral cab.
3270 was built in January of 1978 by EMD for service on the Southern Railway. It only ran on Southern for four years (1978-1982). It ran on a lot of trains for a long time with the high hood design. It was rebuilt in 2015 where it ended up having the admiral cab, which it still has to this day.
3459 was built in December of 1978 by EMD for service on the Burlington Northern Railroad. It was #7125 on BN. It ended up going to CEFX later on with the same number, and eventually to Norfolk Southern. It had the admiral cab currently.
3262 was also built in January of 1978 by EMD for service on the Southern Railway. It eventually was rebuilt where it got the admiral cab.
