Article #106: NS 135 w/ D9-40CW 9713, D9-40C 8787, D9-40CW 8952 SD40-2 6121 & GP38-2 5024 Hickory, NC (September 27, 2013)
In this new article, we will be taking a look at NS 135 westbound through Hickory, North Carolina with D9-40CW's 9713 and 8952, along with D9-40C 8787, SD40-2 6121 and GP38-2 5024. 135 usually went through Hickory during the early afternoon hours at that time.
The D9-40CW's were built between 1996 and 2004. These locomotives were a staple on the majority of Norfolk Southern trains for many years. A lot of them have been rebuilt into AC44C6M's during the last few years. The were delivered with 4,00 horsepower but were eventually upgraded to 4,400 horsepower.
The D9-40C's were built in 1995 and had the standard cab. These locomotives ran for over twenty years as they were also rebuilt into AC44C6M's.
SD40-2 6121 was built in the 1970's for service on the Norfolk & Western. GP38-2 5024 has the high hood design and was built in February of 1972 for service on the Southern Railway. At this time, it was repainted in the current paint scheme.
