Article #101: Cone Mills Boxcar North Carolina Transportation Museum (May 17, 2025)
In this new article we will be taking a look at Cone Mills boxcar #16 which is now preserved at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC.
This boxcar is a steel boxcar that was built in 1932 for service on the Central of Georgia Railroad. IN 1937, Central of Georgia ordered 500 of these cars and were numbered 4000 to 4499. This car was #4485. Cone Mills purchased sixteen of these cars (#1-16). In 1970, it was purchased by Cone Mills to move flannel between Revolution Mill and Proximity Print Works in Greensboro, NC.
Cone Mills manufactured denim and flannel from 1888 to 1999. They were also a major employer locally.
In 2002, it was saved from scrap and was donated to the museum. It is currently on static display where it has a yarn storage demonstration.
